George Floyd’s Death Tore Us Apart, But Can Patrick Hutchinson Bring Us Together Again?

Over the past few weeks, protests and riots have broken out all over the world following the death of African-American George Floyd. The world has been torn into roughly three parts; the Black Lives Matter movement, the All Lives Matter movement, and those of us who just want to restore peace and get back to the original point of our focus, the coronavirus.

All over the world, police officers have been targeted and injured following claims of racism and police brutality, businesses have been trashed and friendships have ended over support for opposing sides. In all of this, the hope for humanity seems pretty bleak.

But over the weekend, this story has gone viral in UK news. Just as the latest death of Rayshard Brooks opens wounds in America, could it be the heroic actions of Patrick Hutchinson who helps us heal?

I think it’s truly honourable that Patrick does not regard himself as a hero, but I think his actions have earned him the title by accident rather than by design. Heroes typically save many lives rather than just one, and Patrick and his friends used human decency and security training to do exactly that. If their story helps to repair divisions and restore peace, then it would make Patrick and his friends fitting recipients such a title.

Right now, the far right owe it to Black Lives Matter protesters that one of their own was saved. This man could have easily been trampled or beaten to death, and Patrick and his friends saved him. Who can deny that black lives matter after this? Only a monster would turn their back on them.

Patrick’s words should be something that responates with us and that we aim for, now and in the future. This is not about black lives mattering more than anyone else, this is about equality for all.
